As You Like It

Here's to exam on Renaissance Literature. Results: as of now, unknown. Anticipation: highly stressful. Studying: high fun.

So, enjoy my favourite version of As You Like It, and, as it were, the only one I've ever seen. It's curiously filled with pretty 1830s-40s clothes. And it's fun.

  1. This was the first of the televised Shakespeare plays which were on American public tv back in the 80s, I think. Helen Mirren was Rosalind, and Angharad Rees was Celia. I loved it! I will have to make some time to watch this version.

  2. I don't think this is the Helen Mirren version... because there's also a Helen Mirren version on YouTube, and it's not this one. :-)

  3. Sorry - I didn't mean to say it was. I meant that the Helen Mirren version was the first Shakespeare play they did on tv way back when they did them all. This one looks good, too.

  4. This one is a recording from a Shakespearean festival, if I understand it correctly... and, apparently, they acted it out in a similar way they probably did in the Renaissance, with mostly empty stage. I really like it that way. Imagination let loose. :-)

  5. Love, love, love Shakespeare! Henry V is my favorite the Kenneth Branaugh version.

  6. You should see the new "As You Like It"... set in Japan. I LOVE it. In fact, I'm planning on posting a review on it sometime soon... :)

  7. I think I've seen the trailer... It looks rather weird. But I guess in a good way.

  8. Have you seen K. Branagh's "Much Ado About Nothing"? I love that one.
My favorite Hamlet was Derek Jacobi.
My cousins just saw Al Pacino as Shylock!
A number of years ago there was a live (I think) version on TV of "Twelfth Night" with Helen Hunt as Viola and Kyra Sedgwick as Olivia - I enjoyed it, but the "lesser" characters, like Sir Toby and Sir Andrew are the ones who stole the show - the fellow who played Sir Andrew was brilliant - I was laughing out loud. I have tried and tried to find it, but it doesn't seem to be available for purchase.

Have you seen Kevin Kline's version of "Cyrano de Bergerac"? He was terrific in it.

    Ok, that's enough! :)
