Blue dress, accessorised with a tomcat

These are not exactly the best quality photos: I took them at half past eight, PM, when the temperature outside was 30 degree Celsius. Make your best guess as to what it was like to step outside earlier... and how Kuusi survived in that black furcoat of his!

(I only grabbed him at the last moment before the self-timer went off; before I positioned myself there, he had been eagerly examining the legs of my tripod.)

I actually did step outside earlier, dressed like this. Minus Kuusi, though he ties my black sandals in nicely. I met up with my friend; we wanted to go to our favourite café again, but it was closed today because of a technical issue (said a sign outside), so instead we went to the patisserie, had an ice cream each and bought some sweet things to eat and went to my home instead and had mint tea from that mint I do not want to get crushed under the TARDIS. Blueberry milkshake would have been better, but mint tea is good.

The point of these photos is my supportive undergarment. That's right: I wore my wrap stays.

With a lightweight, loosely-woven cotton top underneath acting as my chemise, I was (and am) still much less hot and sweaty than I get after just a while with my foam-cup bras in heats like these. No other bras than underwire foam-cup give me enough support, but they're absolutely dreadful in summer. No more! I'm now a short jumps convert. :D

Seeing as the forecast is for heats to last till the end of August (we'll see about that...), I'm very, very happy about this discovery!

Oh, the dress was made by my mom, for my sister, years ago (back in 1990s, actually) - it's Burda Super Easy 3243, rather similar to the famous vintage Butterick Walkaway dress in its concept. I tie it in the back instead of the front, though, because I like the look of that better on me. It's a bit too short for my liking, so normally I only wear it around the house, but that particular feature in combination with its relaxed fit made it perfect for this weather... and the relaxed fit was good for my undergarments.

  1. Very clever! I can well believe those polyester bras are revolting in heat like that! And that your jumps are better. Fresh mint tea, yummm...

    1. I am glad to keep the mint in the garden. And that it survived the long winter we had without any harm.

  2. I wonder how many people in the street realized how out of fashion your undies were! But they do look great (: I've always wondered about wearing jumps, or even Regency stays, under certain styles of party dresses....hmm...

    1. Very much out of fashion! :D I wore them again today... and plan to do so many a time! And eventually make myself another pair. My sister also expressed the wish to have something like that to wear under some dresses. It's apparently not that noticeable when put on carefully and worn with something looser on top - these give me a fairly modern lift and shape.

    1. The hat was a lucky thrift shop find. :-)
It took me a long time to finish these, and to actually start wearing them. I guess the advice is to just start, and eventually you may also finish. :D

    1. Given the many ill-fitting bras one can see in the streets, I guess nobody gives a second thought to one that fits! :D

  5. I like both your blue dress and your hat! Agree with Stephanie about the cat, too.

  6. The outfit is adorable, and I love the light. It gives the photos a vintage, summery atmosphere. And of course, cats make perfect accessories.

    1. It's a very summery atmosphere... Cats make perfect accessories, but not all of them are happy about it. :D But Kuusi is the stoic one.

  7. Hi Hana - as a male, I don't think I should comment on ladies undergarments :-) Just very glad to know you've found something that is comfortable to wear during the current heat (no need for the 's') we are experiencing in the Czech Republic at present.

What I would say is I don't think you need to be concerned about your dress being too short. It is a lot longer that what you see many Czech women wearing - I think it's just a nice length & I very much like the black furry fashion accessory :-)

    1. Ricky, I very much appreciate your language-related comments, so that's certainly an area where your input is useful and welcome!

I feel somewhat self-conscious in this length regardless, especially if I move around... it's really just personal preference.

Seeing this blog is primarily my Dress Diaries, there is simply dress talk, and some modest underdress talk, going on. I'm rather surprised at the number of male readers I get these days. :D

    2. Hana - As you kindly regularly read & comment on my blog, the least I can do, even though I'm male, is to return the compliment! And whilst your blog is predominantly about dresses, sewing, fabric etc, you do also write about places in the Czech Republic, their history & their architecture, such as the previous post about Bučovice, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading & on which I also left a comment. Hence you have male readers, including this one :-)
